At eGloo, our mission has always been to build high-performance, intelligent network visibility tools that empower organizations of all sizes. Over the years, Netify DPI has grown into a powerful engine, powering networks worldwide and excelling in demanding environments like the residential gateway market.
To ensure we can continue innovating rapidly, removing friction for our partners, and building the best deep packet inspection ecosystem possible, we are making a strategic shift in how we license and distribute Netify DPI moving forward.
What We’re Doing
We are transitioning Netify DPI and its plugin ecosystem from an open-source codebase to a proprietary model.
Here is what this means in practice:
Source Code Repositories: Moving forward past version 5.2.9, future source code repositories will no longer be publicly published.
Source Code Access Options: For enterprise partners, OEMs, and customers requiring full code visibility for compliance or business continuity, flexible arrangements - including shared source code access and formal software escrow agreements - are available.
Package Availability ("Free as in Beer"): Netify DPI isn't going anywhere for operators and users. Pre-compiled binaries and official packages will remain completely free to download and run across all major Linux distributions and OpenWrt.
Long-Term Support for Open Source (v5.2.9): Netify 5.2.9 serves as the final open-source LTS release. We are fully committed to supporting version 5.2.9 with maintenance, bug fixes, and security patches through April 2030.
Why We’re Making This Strategic Pivot
Every great project evolves. This transition is driven by three major realities that give us an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate Netify's roadmap and secure its future.
1. Realigning Development Focus Around Community Reality
The core promise of open-source software is fostering a broad contributor ecosystem where community pull requests drive progress beyond a single company’s internal resources. After more than nine years of maintaining open-source repositories, our real-world data told a clear story: we received fewer than a dozen external pull requests in nearly a decade.
While our community loves using Netify, the engineering and maintenance burden rested entirely on eGloo. Recognizing this allows us to streamline our development pipelines and focus 100% of our energy on delivering features, stability, and speed directly to our users.
2. Eliminating Legal Friction to Power Gateway Growth
Netify is thriving in the residential gateway, CPE, and ISP market. However, our legacy dependency on nDPI’s dissectors - licensed under GPLv3 - created significant friction for large-scale adoption.
In the OEM and ISP landscape, GPLv3 clauses surrounding signed firmware, hardware access, and consumer rights often created insurmountable legal hurdles. Time and time again, we celebrated successful technical Proofs of Concept (PoCs) with telecom partners, only to watch deployments stall during legal due diligence due to GPLv3 compliance headaches.
With the completion of our proprietary NINOX Netify dissector engine, our dependency on nDPI is entirely removed. By replacing nDPI with NINOX, we have eliminated the GPLv3 burden entirely, giving commercial vendors, CPE OEMs, and tier-1 ISPs a frictionless, legally clear path to embed Netify directly into their hardware platforms.
3. Adapting to the AI Era and Playing to Our Strengths
For over 26 years, eGloo has actively participated in, contributed to, and benefited immensely from the open-source movement. We remain deeply grateful for everything open-source software enabled us to achieve. However, artificial intelligence has fundamentally shifted the tech dynamics.
As eloquently articulated in this industry discussion, open-sourcing code in an AI-dominated world no longer provides the same mutual leverage it once did for smaller, independent teams. Today, open-source codebases primarily serve as training fuel for massive tech conglomerates, handing structural advantages to the biggest players rather than empowering the "little guy". To remain competitive and sustainable, we need to play to our own strengths, protect our specialized research and development, and focus on delivering direct value to our customer base.
Moving Forward: Our Promise to Users and Partners
This decision unlocks a bright future for Netify. By removing legal barriers, protecting our IP, and streamlining internal workflows, our engineering team can dedicate full focus to making the NINOX engine faster, smarter, and more efficient.
For existing open-source users who require source visibility, Netify 5.2.9 LTS remains fully available and backed by our long-term maintenance guarantee until April 2030.
For everyone deploying via Linux distros or OpenWrt, you can continue to enjoy free access to our official builds with zero interruption to your existing setup - backed by faster feature rollouts and broader hardware compatibility than ever before.
