EGP was standardized around 1982-1984 (RFC 827/888), and has been obsolete since the late 1980s, replaced by the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP).
IP Protocol Network Policy
IP protocol #8 - Exterior Gateway Protocol - is typically dropped by edge routers and firewalls. Advanced threat actors and malware families can use these non-standard IP protocol numbers for lateral movement (east-west communication) inside internal networks.
