IGMP - IP Protocol
This page provides IP protocol information on the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) detected by the Netify DPI engine. Please see the IP protocol catalog for information on other IP protocols.
IGMP lets IPv4 hosts and adjacent routers establish multicast group memberships, so routers know which interfaces should receive traffic for a given group. Linux has a native handler for this IP protocol.

IP Protocol Status - Active
IGMP was first standardized in 1989 (RFC 1112) and refined through IGMPv3 (RFC 3376) and remains active wherever IPv4 multicast is deployed.
IP Protocol Network Policy
IGMP is needed only on networks running IPv4 multicast (e.g. IPTV, some conferencing tools) so routers can track group membership, and is unnecessary on unicast-only networks.
