OSPF was first standardized in RFC 1131 (1989) and refined through OSPFv2/v3 (RFC 2328, RFC 5340), and is one of the most widely deployed routing protocols today.

OSPF is used by routers running OSPF for interior gateway routing; allow only between routers participating in an OSPF area, not on general end-user network segments.
