PIM was first specified in the mid-1990s and standardized as PIM-SM in RFC 7761 (2016) and remains widely and actively used for IP multicast routing.

PIM is used by routers running PIM for IP multicast routing, such as IPTV or financial data feeds; allow only on networks that have multicast routing explicitly deployed.
