VRRP is the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol, letting a group of routers share a virtual IP address so a backup router can transparently take over on failure. Linux has a native handler for this IP protocol.

IP Protocol Status - Active
VRRP was standardized in RFC 3768 (2004) and most recently updated in RFC 9568 (2024), and is widely and actively used for gateway redundancy today.
IP Protocol Network Policy
VRRP is used by redundant router pairs to share a virtual gateway IP for failover; allow only on internal network segments running VRRP between designated routers.
